The measurements, and how we take them

Irradiance is the most quoted and least verified figure in this category. Here is our method in full, followed by the current result for every device we sell — including the gaps.

Method

Every unit is measured here, not overseas

Devices are measured after they arrive in Australia, from production stock rather than a sample sent ahead by the manufacturer. A pre-production sample tells you what a factory can build once.

Distances are stated, always

Panels are measured at 15 cm and 30 cm from the emitting face. Contact devices — mask, belt, cap — are measured at the skin surface, because that is where they sit. A figure without a distance is not a figure.

Averaged across the face, not the brightest point

We report an average across a grid spanning the emitting area, and we report the centre-point reading separately. Centre-point alone is the largest number a device can produce and the least representative one.

The instrument is named

We publish the meter or spectrometer used, along with its calibration date. Inexpensive solar power meters are calibrated for broad-spectrum sunlight and over-read badly against narrow-band red and near-infrared emitters. Most figures in this category come from one.

Third-party verification
