Easy to keep up
Ten minutes while the kettle boils. That is the whole commitment, and it is the only reason I have stuck with it past a month. Lighter than it looks in the photos.

Cordless, with the timer built in, so the session runs while you read or work. A device that requires you to stop doing everything else is a device that gets used twice.

The case for it
01
A flat emitter sits close at the crown and far at the temples. A domed array holds roughly the same distance across the whole scalp, which is the entire argument for buying a cap rather than pointing a panel at your head.
02
Cordless with an automatic cut-off. Nothing to hold, nothing to time, no cable running to a wall.
03
The liner lifts out and washes. On something worn on the head three to five times a week, that matters more than it sounds on a spec sheet.
Using it
01
Light reaches the scalp more easily through shorter or thinner hair. Part it so the emitters are not sitting on top of it.
02
Press once and carry on reading or working. There is a small internal fan, audible in a silent room and inaudible with anything else going on.
03
Published photobiomodulation protocols generally run eight to twelve weeks before assessing anything. Treat this as a habit, not an event.
Evidence
Scalp studies are unusually well designed for this field — sham-controlled and blinded. Here is what they set out to measure.
Measures examined
A randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled trial measuring hair count in men following scheduled red light exposure of the scalp.
Lanzafame et al., 2013 — Lasers in Surgery and Medicine
The companion trial run in women under the same sham-controlled design and the same measurement method.
Lanzafame et al., 2014 — Lasers in Surgery and Medicine
A review of the proposed mechanism: red and near-infrared wavelengths are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, which is the pathway the whole field is built on.
Karu, 2008 — Photochemistry and Photobiology
A review of dose response in photobiomodulation, and why more light is not linearly better — the biphasic curve that makes irradiance and duration matter more than raw wattage.
Huang, Chen, Carroll & Hamblin, 2009 — Dose-Response
These are independent published studies on red and near-infrared wavelengths. They were not conducted on Skyluxe devices, they are described here rather than interpreted, and nothing on this page claims this product will reproduce their results.

Why buy this one
Almost every device in this category quotes an irradiance figure lifted from a factory datasheet, at an unstated distance, often taken with a meter that was never calibrated for narrow-band emitters. Nobody checks it, so nobody corrects it.
We measure each device ourselves once it lands in Australia, at more than one distance, and publish the instrument and the method beside the result. Where we have not measured something yet, the spec table says so rather than borrowing a figure.
Owners
We publish every review we receive, including the ones that cost us the sale. Nothing here is filtered, incentivised or bought.

Works fine but it is a firm fit on a larger head. Once it is on it is comfortable enough. I would have liked an adjustable band rather than a single size.

A rigid-shell cap with an internal LED array that covers the crown, hairline and temples. Sessions run for a fixed fifteen minutes and the cap cuts off on its own. It is cordless, so it can be worn while you do something else.
The inner dome holds two hundred and eighty-eight LEDs on a curved board designed to keep the emitters at a consistent distance from the scalp rather than clustering them at the top. The liner is removable and washable. One size, adjustable band.
Specified, tested and supported in Australia. We publish our own irradiance measurements and the method behind them on the Our Testing page.

Light reaches the scalp more easily through shorter or thinner hair. Part longer hair before a session so the emitters are not sitting on top of it.
Yes. It is cordless and cuts off on its own, so most people wear it while reading or working.
There is a small internal fan. It is audible in a silent room and inaudible with anything else going on.
It emits light at specific red and near-infrared wavelengths at a stated intensity, for a stated time. That is the whole mechanism. We describe the technology and cite the published research on the Science page, and we publish our own output measurements on the Our Testing page. We do not claim the device produces any particular health outcome for you.
Honestly: it varies, and some people notice nothing. Published studies on photobiomodulation generally run sessions over eight to twelve weeks before assessing anything. If you are looking for a same-week result, this is the wrong purchase. If it does not suit you, the 30-day home trial exists precisely for that.
Do not look directly into the LEDs. Red and near-infrared light is not ultraviolet and does not tan or burn, but the emitters are bright and staring into them is uncomfortable. Wearable devices ship with eye protection built in or included. Keep eyes closed during face sessions.
Our general guidance is short, consistent sessions rather than long, occasional ones — typically three to five sessions a week. Dose depends on intensity, distance and duration together, which is why we publish the Dosing Guide rather than a single number.
Return it within 30 days of delivery for a full refund, used or unused. Within Australia we book and pay for the collection; for orders shipped overseas the return arrangements are set out on the Shipping and Returns page. This is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which cannot be excluded.

Bought it specifically because there was nothing to pair and no monthly fee. One button, a timer that cuts off, done. Build quality is well above the last one I tried.

I was on the fence and asked about the trial before ordering. Got a plain answer about who pays freight and how long it takes, in writing. Kept the cap in the end.
